UFC fights are fought between two fighters of the same weight class. The pair either fights for three rounds or five rounds depending on the scenario of the fight. If the fight is between two guys and no title is on the line or if they are not headlining the vent they fight for three rounds. If the fight is headlining the event or they are fighting for a title. Then the duo stands and trades in the octagon for five rounds. Each round stands on his feet and is for five minutes. The time of each round may vary from promotion to promotion, but in the UFC each round is of five minutes.

UFC 256: Champ Figueiredo finally finds a rival in draw against Moreno

The ways of winning an MMA fight in the UFC are but he means of knockout, technical knockout, doctor stoppage, submission, and decision. The fight can also end in several other manners but that scenario of the fight is added under the TKO-Technical knockout section.

There are three types of decisions in the UFC. Unanimous, split, majority decision.

UNANIMOUS DECISION

Holloway breaks Kattar, UFC

When all the three judges score the fight for the same fighter then the result is called to be a unanimous decision. When one of the fighters is dominant and beats his opponent in all aspects of the guy then usually the judges score the fight completely for one fighter. One of the most recent examples of such a dominant fight is at UFC ON ABC 1 in January 2021. Max Holloway fought Calvin Kattar. Holloway defeated Calvin by unanimous decision. He beat him up for five rounds and scored several knockdowns. There were many moments in the fight where the referee could have stopped it but somehow Kattar survived.

SPLIT DECISION

Georges St. Pierre UFC 167 win over Johny Hendricks

When two judges score the contest for one contestant and one judge scores for the opponent. One of the biggest examples of a split decision win is Georges St-Pierre vs Johnny Hendricks. GSP defeated Johnny Hendricks by a split decision. The fight was a back-and-forth action. St-Pierre faced Johny Hendricks on November 16, 2013, in the main event at UFC 167. St-Pierre won the fight by controversial split decision (47–48, 48–47, and 48–47). The fight was very close and many people thought Johnny win as he did more damage but it was GSP’s volume that made him win the match.

Based on the 10-point Must System, one can make a convincing argument that St-Pierre deserved the victory.

MAJORITY DECISION

McGregor vs Diaz 2

When two judges score the contest for the same contestant and the other judge scores the fight as a draw. This situation usually appears in close fights as one of the judges is unsure whether to give to either of the fighters or to Score it a draw and not give the fight to any of the fighters.

One of the notable examples of such a case is the Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz rematch fight. Nate Diaz was set as a replacement to face Conor McGregor on March 5, 2016, at UFC 196, filling in for an injured Rafael dos Anjos. With Diaz only having eleven days’ notice, the fight took place at welterweight (170 lbs) due to lack of time to cut weight. Diaz won the fight via submission in the second round. This gave Diaz his ninth submission victory in the UFC, tied for the second-most all-time behind only Royce Gracie.

A rematch with Diaz was scheduled for 9 July at UFC 200. However, on 19 April, the UFC announced that McGregor had been pulled from the event. In turn, the fight with McGregor was rescheduled. It took place the following month, contested again at welterweight, at UFC 202. McGregor won the rematch via majority decision (48–47, 47–47, and 48–47).

UNANIMOUS DRAW

When all the three judges for the fight decided to declare the match as a draw in the UFC. The fight has to be very very close and both the fighters should have the same output. That’s how the judges decide to give a draw. Chris Gutierrez and Cody Durden are the first duos in the UFC to register a Unanimous draw.

SPLIT DRAW

UFC on ESPN+ 22: Rua vs. Paul Craig draw

Split Draw in the UFC takes place when one of the three judges scores the fight as a draw and the rest two judges give the fight to either of the fighters. Rua was expected to face Sam Alvey on 16 November 2019 at UFC on ESPN+ 22. However, Alvey was removed from the fight. On 25 October due to a broken hand and was replaced by Paul Craig. After three rounds, the back-and-forth fight was declared a split draw.

MAJORITY DRAW

| UFC

Two of the three judges score the fight a draw. This situation also rarely happens as it’s hard for the judges to score the fight draw and that two of them scoring gt the fight the same is likely to happen. Woodley made his first title defense against Stephen Thompson on November 12, 2016, at UFC 205. The fight ended in a majority draw. Two of the judges scored the fight 47–47 and the third 48–47 in favor of Woodley.
