With the return of UFC to a full capacity live event in Jacksonville, FL, on April the 24th, the company has decided to put three championship bouts on the card. The main event, however, will be the rematch of Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal for the welterweight championship.

Usman took on Masvidal just under a year ago at “fight Island” in Abu Dhabi. Usman was originally scheduled to fight Gilbert Burns, but when he tested positive for Covid-19 Masvidal stepped in with only a week to prepare.

Masvidal’s claim of losing because of lack of time to prepare for the fight might be legitimate, he will now get a chance to prove himself right.

Leading up to the fight Masvidal has been upping his social media chatter, taking shots at not just Usman but at Ben Askren as well. In an Instagram video he taunted:

“Another picture-perfect moment is coming up—courtesy of Usman’s face.” and “Because when you (Askren) and Usman see me, you tuck tail and go the other way,” referring to the flying knee to the face that knocked out Askren with.

Masvidal is fighting pretty much in his backyard, being a native Floridian, so the crowd should be behind him. That just might be the edge “Gamebred” needs against the “Nigerian Nightmare”, you can never underestimate the power of the crowd.

Even with the proper time to prepare for this bout, the odds makers are favoring Usman more than last year at -380 compared to the previous -260. Masvidal comes in with a +290, whereas last year he was only a +210 underdog. If you are looking to take a chance on an underdog, this just might be the right time.

Whatever the result is this time around Masvidal will have no excuses.
