McGregor vs Poirier: Trilogy is now in Doubt

As quickly as it was confirmed the trilogy fight between Connor McGregor and Dustin Poirier could be off. As much as the two fighters seemed to be almost pleasant to each other before the fight at UFC 257, the tone has become very bitter indeed.

The rivalry has gone from the usual ring banter to becoming something more personal. McGregor posted a video of various kicks and punches on a heavy bag with a prediction of a knock-out in round 4. Poirier responded on Twitter with something that seemed to sting McGregor more than anyone might have thought.

That’s a fun prediction! You also predicted a donation to my foundation and you and your team stopped responding after the fight in January. See you soon. July 10th Paid In Full!”

This stems from a promised donation from McGregor, win or lose, before the fight at UFC 257. Poirier now claims he and his team reached out to McGregor’s but got no response. While the McGregor camp says they have asked for a detailed plan of where the money will go before donating, they have not heard from Poirier’s side.

McGregor has become well known for his charitable contributions through this time of Covid and has taken great offense to Poirier trying to tarnish his reputation. He fired back in response.

A donation, not a debt. We’ve been awaiting the plans for the money that never came. I do with all my donations. Know where it’s going dot for dot. Otherwise it goes walking. As is the case with a lot of these foundations, sadly. You took the McG over the belt shows I was right.”

After Poirier responded once again about being “ignored” by McGregor, he fired back.

My team does their due diligence to make sure every donation meets the mark. My generosity is known. You will pay with your brain for this attempt at smearing my name.”

And later added “500k with no plan in place. Ye hang tight. Fool. You must be new to money. The fight is off btw. I’m going to fight someone else on the 10th.”

The Trilogy is to be the main event at UFC 264 pay per-view on July 10. Despite the UFC not officially announcing it, both men have signed the contracts for the fight. If this fight goes down, it stands to be the most watched fight in UFC history, not to mention a huge payday for all involved.

Before all this happened the odds moved a little, McGregor is still favored but going from -150 opening odds to -125. While Poirier has gone from +130 to +105. But after seeing the McGregor video and how much better he was moving, you have to figure they will move again.
“The Notorious” is really fired up and looking to exact some vengeance on Poirier, for both the insult and previous loss. And you know “The Diamond” is looking to prove the win was no fluke and he is not only the top lightweight fighter but the legend killer too.
