Jorge Masvidal And Leon Edwards Will Settle Their Grudge

Jorge Masvidal

On 5 July 2020, it was reported that Masvidal had stepped in on less than a week’s notice to face Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 251. He was replacing the original challenger Gilbert Burns, who had tested positive for COVID-19 on 3 July 2020. Before the fight, he signed a new, multi-fight contract with the UFC. He lost the uneventful fight via unanimous decision. The card reportedly generated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys in the United States, the most since UFC 229 in October 2018. Masvidal faced Kamaru Usman in a rematch for the UFC Welterweight Championship on April 24, 2021, at UFC 261 and was knocked out in the second round, marking the first time he had ever been stopped in the UFC.

Leon Edwards | UFC

Edwards was expected to face Nate Diaz on May 15, 2021, in the co-headliner of UFC 262, marking the first time a non-main event and non-title bout had been scheduled for 5 rounds in UFC history. However, the bout was moved to UFC 263 due to a minor injury sustained by Diaz, eventually taking place under five rounds as well. Edwards controlled a vast majority of the bout but was stunned badly with punches late in the fifth, however, he managed to survive and win the fight by unanimous decision.
