When and why did you start training for fighting? I started fighting because I was always the smallest, getting pushed around, but there came a time when I wasn’t wrestling anymore and I was in college and I got jumped by two people on my 19th birthday and realized that it was my true calling.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? A UFC contract means that I’m finally getting what I have earned. I have been through a lot more than any of these Contender Series guys. I have had my career almost taken from me when I broke my jaw, and I am more because of it. I try not to brag about it because it hit on a deeper level with my family and everyone that was there when it happened that life isn’t promised, so you better get it done today before time runs out because it’s not an endless clock.
What was your job before you started fighting? Cut grass and whooped ass.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? Featherweight state champion and Caged Kombat champion, Arena Combat champion (amateur accomplishments)
When and why did you start training for fighting? I was a fat kid growing up (really fat) and after high school I started losing weight and getting into better shape. I got into training MMA to mix up my workouts and learn some self-defense. After a few months, my coach thought I was pretty good and asked me if I’d be interested in taking a fight. I figured, why not? I’m 21 and played sports my whole life and now I have nothing to do, let’s give it a shot. I won my first fight by KO in the third round and haven’t looked back since.
What ranks and titles have you held? I’m a brown belt in BJJ and I’m the two-time heavyweight champ for Reality Fighting.
Do you have any heroes? Not really. I have a lot of people that I respect/admire for their accomplishments, but I wouldn’t really call anyone my hero.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s a cliché, but this is a dream come true. I’ve had this goal for 14 years and I’ve had one hurdle after another slow me down and sometimes flat out derail me. Getting to this level is a huge personal accomplishment for me and gives me a strong sense of pride.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? No college
What was your job before you started fighting? I had a couple, most recently construction and carpentry, but I’ve also been a personal trainer, worked night club security, and coached kickboxing.
